Darumas were used as a lucky charm to protect themselves from the sicknesses in Edo Era (1603-1868). Initially, only red daruma existed since red was considered as a colour to protect from illness and accident.

 

Nowadays, still being used as a lucky charm, but for more multi purposes (e.g. such as happiness, academic achievement, relationship, success in business).

When you make a wish, you put left-eye first, and once it is achieved, you put the right-eye at the end.
